Return of the sockeye
As the Ocean Renegade drifts closer, Jay Oswald leaps off his barge and into her hold to toss sockeye salmon into a huge white plastic bin. Behind him, four other boats cluster, waiting to offload their catch. As a crane lifts a load of sockeye off the boat and on to his barge named Slush, Oswald scans the scale, yelling the weight of the catch to his colleague Kevin Fairley who scribbles it on to a form.

Living in harmony with beavers
Not far from a spot where a beaver toppled a tree on to a power line, sparking a brush fire last summer, four volunteers work to ensure the industrious rodents can’t chew through another pine. They’ve spent the morning behind a townhouse complex which abuts Kanaka Creek wrapping trees with wire to protect them from a family of beavers.
